Novel H1N1 pandemic flu (also known as swine flu) infections are widespread globally. Fortunately, the vast majority of cases are mild, and at this point, the H1N1 virus appears no more virulent or severe than most seasonal flus. This strain does seem to occur more frequently in children and young adults, because those who are younger than 50 have not yet had contact with a virus similar to this type. All members of the Caltech community are strongly encouraged to take the standard precautions adopted during the flu season and to play an active role in our public-health efforts.

For many years, Caltech has had emergency plans in place to address wide-ranging campus issues and health concerns. We have extended these preparedness efforts to respond to the H1N1 pandemic. Our emergency-response teams receive regular input from the Pasadena and Los Angeles Public Health Departments and include members from the Health Center; Student Affairs; Communications; Environment, Health, and Safety Services; and many others.

This website is intended to provide basic information on prevention, symptoms, and treatment of H1N1 influenza. Although the virus cannot be stopped, there are several key things that you can do to help prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu. Caltech will alert personnel if circumstances arise that require further action on campus.

Tips for Flu Prevention:

Implement meticulous hand hygiene: Wash hands often with soap and warm water. Use sanitizing gel when water is not available.

Practice considerate respiratory etiquette: Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. If you do not have a tissue, cough into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Keep your immune system strong with regular exercise, vitamin-rich foods, sufficient sleep, and plenty of fluids.

Avoid sharing eating utensils, water bottles, towels, or bedding without first washing these items with soap and hot water.

Clean things that are touched often, such as phones, doorknobs, and water faucets.

Stay away from work, classes, or other public gatherings when sick with a fever or actively coughing.

Stay informed about developments regarding the pandemic influenza by visiting the CDC website.
